Tax season can already be stressful—but adding scammers into the mix makes it even more important to stay alert. Every year, criminals use emails, texts, phone calls, and fake websites to trick people into giving away personal or financial information. The good news: with a little awareness, you can confidently protect yourself and your money.

1. Know the Signs of a Tax Scam

Scammers often pretend to be government agencies or tax professionals. Be cautious if you receive:

  • Sudden messages demanding immediate payment

  • Threats of arrest, lawsuits, or license suspension

  • Requests for your Social Security number, bank login, or debit card info

  • Communication from unofficial or suspicious email addresses

Legitimate tax agencies don’t use aggressive language, demand gift cards, or pressure you into instant action.

2. Protect Your Personal Information

Never share sensitive information through email, text, or social media. Use strong, unique passwords for your financial accounts and enable two-factor authentication when possible. If someone contacts you unexpectedly, always verify their identity through an official phone number or website—not the one provided in the message.

3. File Early and Use Trusted Tools

The earlier you file your taxes, the less opportunity scammers have to file a fraudulent return in your name. Stick to reputable tax software, certified tax professionals, or official government websites when completing your return.

4. Double-Check Payment Requests

Real government tax agencies typically provide multiple ways to pay and never demand payment through gift cards, cash apps, crypto wallets, or prepaid debit cards. If someone insists on these methods, it’s a scam.

5. Report Suspicious Activity Immediately

If you encounter a scam attempt, report it to the appropriate authorities. Acting quickly can help protect not only your own finances but also others who may be targeted.
