Ever Notice How One Comment Ruins Your Whole Day?
You could get 15 compliments.
One weird comment.
And suddenly your brain decides that’s the only one that matters.
That’s called a mental filter.
It’s when your brain zooms in on the negative and completely ignores everything else.
It’s like watching a whole season of a show and only remembering the worst episode.
What Is a Mental Filter?
A mental filter is a thinking pattern where:
You focus only on what went wrong
You replay mistakes over and over
You ignore positive feedback
You assume one bad moment defines everything
Imagine if your brain worked like an algorithm that only showed you bad reviews.
Exhausting, right?
It’s Not Just You
Even artists talk about this.
Think about how many songs are written about overthinking one conversation, one text, one moment. (Looking at you, late-night replay brain.)
Your brain is wired to notice danger — but sometimes it treats embarrassment like it’s a life-or-death situation.
It’s not.
The “One Burnt Cookie” Test
If you baked a batch of cookies and one burned…
Would you throw the whole batch away?
Probably not.
But when we mess up once, we decide:
“I’m bad at this.”
“Everyone thinks I’m awkward.”
“I always ruin things.”
That’s the mental filter talking.
How to Catch It
Next time your brain spirals, ask:
What am I focusing on?
What positive things am I ignoring?
If my friend did this, what would I say to them?
You don’t have to ignore the negative.
Just don’t let it be the only thing you see.
Your brain isn’t broken.
It’s just zoomed in too far.
And you’re allowed to zoom out.
